Observed location: Middle Fork in Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, between 1,000 and 2,000 ft. elevation
Native range: western North America (from N. California to the Aleutian Islands) and Asia (Kamchatka Peninsula, Japan, and Korea)
- coastal temperate rainforests
- abundant in coniferous and deciduous forests, especially in forest margins
- 0–800 m.
Key characteristics:
- ovate leaf with cordate base and conspicuous veins
- 2–3 leaves on fertile shoots, solitary on non-fertile
- inflorescence – erect raceme
