Observed location: Middle Fork in Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, between 1,000 and 2,000 ft. elevation

Native range: western North America (from N. California to the Aleutian Islands) and Asia (Kamchatka Peninsula, Japan, and Korea)

  • coastal temperate rainforests
  • abundant in coniferous and deciduous forests, especially in forest margins
  • 0–800 m.

Key characteristics:

  • ovate leaf with cordate base and conspicuous veins
  • 2–3 leaves on fertile shoots, solitary on non-fertile
