Philadelphus (mock-orange)
Philadelphus – from the Greek phil-, loving, + adelphos, brother
- traditionally thought to be an honorific for Ptolemy Philadelphus, 309–246 B.C.E., King of Ptolemaic Egypt [see Flora of North America]
- Aristotle gave the name to a tree, now unknown, to commemorate that king [see Pojar and Mackinnon]
- name was applied to this genus by Linneas, with species name applied by Pursh, a German American botanist (1774–1820)
